The Polish Army in France WW1 - Haller's Army
They fought for their family. They fought for their ancestors. They fought for their freedom. Most of all they fought for their homeland - Poland.

"They" were known by a few different names - - The Haller Army, the Blue Army(Błękitna Armia), and also as the Polish Legion in France. This Blue Army (they wore horizon blue French uniforms) was the Polish contribution to the forces on the western front in WWI. While they initially fought under the French, they fought in the name of Poland and for the ultimate goal of Polish independence. By the war's end this force was officially recognized as the independent Polish Army and their leader was General Jozef Haller (the former leader of the 2nd Polish Legion under the Austrians).

Photographs of Polish Military Organization (POW - Polska Organizacja Wojskowa) taken in 1917

Comment: Outbreak of the First World War stirred Polish hopes for regaining independence. Despite the Poles' strength and will to fight the partitioners did not offer them any form of collaboration. The exception was the Legions, created by Jozef Pilsudski by the Austrian army. In 1915 they had about 20 thousand soldiers. In spite of taking control over area of the Kingdom of Poland the Central Powers did not make any attempt to restore Polish state, only used Polish soldiers to fight against Russia. Attempts to take over command of the Legions and intention of replacing Polish commanders with German ones discouraged the Poles who until then had supported the Central Powers. Pilsudski, a creator of the Legions, stopped conscription and began to develop secret Polish Military Organization, established already on the 8th of September 1914 through unification of Polish Rifle Squads and Rifle Union. Initially it was active mainly in area of the Kingdom of Poland, carrying out sabotage and intelligence actions against Russia. Later it expanded its field of action to Galicia, Ukraine and Russia. Its main aim was fighting for independence of Poland. A general commander was Pilsudski. After his imprisonment in July 1917 his duties were assumed by Edward Rydz-Smigly. Commanders-in-chief were lieutenant Taduesz Zulinski and since September 1915 captain Tadeusz Kasprzycki.

In the beginning POW dealt with intelligence and military training. The organization was quickly developing. In 1916 it already encompassed 17 districts and 77 areas, had 13 thousand members: instructors, students of secret military courses and reservists - trained or waiting for training. In 1918 POW took part in taking control over Galicia and disarming Germans in Kingdom of Poland. It was also military force of the government in Lublin. In 1918 POW was incorporated to the Polish Army.
